In 2015, the Estes Park EDC and the Town of Estes Park retained Avalanche Consulting, Inc. of Austin, TX to prepare a strategic plan to guide efforts to improve the economic base and long-term economic resiliency of the Estes Valley.

(The project was funded as part of a $300,000 financial award from the Economic Development Administration of the Department of Commerce.) The objective for the project was clear from the outset: produce a strong, resilient, year-round economic environment while protecting and improving its quality of life.  Our plan also keeps faith with the values that historically have distinguished Estes Valley as a very special place in which to work and live.

The project set forth to accomplish the following community objectives:

1.       Preserving and enhancing the Estes Valley’s quality of life and community values through:

o   Creating and sustaining resilient year-round economic activity,

o   Creating an environment that supports continuously improving economic activity, and

o   Enhancing the community’s competitive assets and regional competitiveness.

2.       Establishing harmonious and effective actionable roles for key stakeholders.

3.       Providing a basis for effective future decision-making.

The Estes Valley Economic Development Strategy reflects extensive community engagement.

During the strategic planning process, a large number of Estes Valley residents and other stakeholders provided input and articulated a cohesive vision for the future.  Between January and August 2015, nearly 800 people filled out the Estes Valley Community Survey, 90 participated in focus groups and interviews, and another 90 attended public forums to discuss the strategy.  In addition, Avalanche engaged more than once with Estes Park Town Board members as well as Board members of the Estes Park EDC, which represents a broad group of both public and private organizations.

The project team researched and recommended target clusters to become the focus of the Estes Valley’s economic development activities. Profiles of these target clusters are provided in the second appendix to the Economic Development Strategy report, Target Business Cluster Profiles.

Our target industries allow us to align with our local economy, with the Region 2 Colorado Blueprint and the statewide industry targets pursued by Colorado OEDIT’s Colorado Blueprint 2.0

On this website, we highlight our Industry Clusters on individual webpages, and also present highlights concerning specific priority projects in our community.

The combination of extensive research, public outreach and professional expertise and experience resulted in the final report.

The Plan provides a broad framework and recommendations by which the Estes Valley community can move ahead to secure and sustain its economic future and do so in ways that that anchor and reflect those qualities that are special to us all.  In this Report, Amy Holloway and her associates at Avalanche Consulting provided a comprehensive roadmap to guide us forward as a community.  The responsibility for taking the next steps on that journey are, of course, ours and ours alone.
